Excitement runs high in the CODED camp as we announce the addition of dynamic Cape Town based Psy-Trance duo, The Commercial Hippies, to our diversely multi-talented team. Comprised of Anton Raubenheimer and Gareth Tacon, TCH have been making waves lately, both locally and internationally. CODED is lucky enough to have signed them to produce several totally original binaural tracks for our new upcoming sci-fi feature film.

The guys have been touring the globe for the past few years and in September 2012 released their 5 track EP “Underground Overground” available online as a free download from their website HERE.

With a string of upcoming free and commercial releases, TCH are enjoying another whirlwind busy year. As usual you can expect TCH to be pushing the boundaries of the Psy-Trance genre, always wanting to try something new, and not conform to the status quo. Sounds like a perfect fit with the CODED clan…

The eagerly anticipated CODED promo video is due for release during this year’s 34th Durban International Film Festival, taking place in July 2013. Featuring the brand new TCH track String Theory, also in glorious binaural, fans can expect commercial release to coincide with this event.

Expect the shift, CODED cometh…

Kushaya Igagasi – Hit the Waves

Far superior to the latest 3D television, Bluestockings brings to life a short documentary, filmed late 2012 for E-TV by local filmmaker Megan Steyn. For this event, she draws together the real life heroes of the doccie and the supporting musicians, to combine light, sound and live performance, the theatrical storytelling of events leading up to Kushaya Igagasi – Hitting the Waves, and how these fit, young heroes grasped a lifeline given them as street children, from NGO Umthombo, and never let go.

Can you imagine a streetchilds face when you give him a surfboard and tell him theres more to life? Four of the ex-streetchildren will be joining us for storytelling after the screening, as well as local contributing musicians Sihle Ndima and Shomon, promising a real life translation of what was captured on film for TV. Sihle will be performing 2 songs that he and 4 young guys from Umthombo have created.

Join us for real life stories of enchantment, strength and hope for those once disowned by society, who threw down the ladder and picked up a newly donated surfboard, to travel the world, spreading the message with their story, that it doesn’t end at the bottom of the barrel…!

Kushaya Igagasi

An inspirational story of hardship, street life and passion for surfing Kushaya Igagasi, which means hitting the waves, is a documentary that tells a story of four guys – Sihle (20), Andile (20), Shorty (19) and Lucky (23) - who as youngsters ended up on the streets due to different reasons. They join Umthombo, a non-governmental organization that empowers street children towards alternatives to street life. The documentary shares the lives of the four and thechallenges they face on the streets, their love for surfing and life beyond Umthombo. The documentary will serve to highlight the plight of street kidsand show that there is hope, a brighter and safer future for them.

Sihle is 20 years and comes from Inanda Township in the South of Durban. His parents passed away when he was young and he headed for the streets. Sihle found his way to Umthombo and that is where he learnt surfing. Through his surfing talent he has secured a sponsorship with Peg. He recently won the Kushay’ Igagasi Surf competition. He is a qualified surfing coach and is in the process of reopening a surf school, which he was running before.
Andile is 19 years old and comes from Umlazi Township. He never knew his mother and his father passed away from cancer when he was a small boy. He lived with his grandmother but no one was employed at home and no one could afford to take him to school. So he took to the streets hoping to find a better life.

Lucky (Nhlanhla, 23) comes from Lindelani Township, South of Durban. He is 22 years old and started living on the street when he was 10 years old. Lucky lost his mother to TB and his father when he was very young. His love for the water started from at a very early age. He was sponsored by O’Neill, and he has worked as a lifeguard at the beach front. Having just passed his annual lifeguarding retest, Lucky is very anxious to get a job this season
Shorty (Xolani, 19) is from Kwa Mashu Township. He started living on the street when he was 8 years old. He learnt how to surf when he was at Umthombo. He recently came third in the Kushay’ Igagasi competition that was held at Dairy Beach on 24th November 2012.

The Kushay’ Igagasi Surf Competition was a world first – from start to finish the event was run in IsiZulu – all judges, commentators and surfers were Zulu.

Shomon

Performing only her own original compositions, her non-commercial, yet deeply moving lyrics and
melodies have been described by the media and fellow musicians as meaningful, nourishing, igniting
all the senses, unique, unpredictable, beautiful, necessary and magical.
Shomon becomes one with her music, as she transports her audience into another dimension. Her
voice is so powerful that it transforms her from a gentle healing angel into a powerful and raunchy
“rock chick” in the space of a few bars. Shomon’s lyrics reflect and reveal the reality of her personal
journey through life, with all observations, feelings and emotions laid bare, allowing the audience to
recognise and embrace things within themselves. It is not so much a performance, but rather an
awesome experience, for both the artist and audience.
“I have realised that my gift in life is my relationship with music and, after being coaxed into
performing, it has been a rollercoaster ride of opportunities, performances, collaborations, blessings,
abundance and self-discovery”.
Shomon is based in Durban ~ South Arica, where she delights in the miracle of Life and the power of
music.

Sihle Ndima

Also known as Mhligo, is an artist and social activist. With his music, he seeks to address the challenges faced by youth in his community, and engage his audience through humorous and uplifting lyrics. He hopes to bring about change in the Umlazi community so that his generation and future generations of youth can see brighter futures. Mhligo believes that even in impoverished communities where HIV/AIDS, teenage pregnancy and drug abuse are rampant, social awareness and youth participation can make a difference. He knows that the road out of poverty is difficult but he also sees that the only way out is through community-level work. Mhligo has committed his life to working in his community.
Mhligo is currently works at Umthombo Street Shelter as a child and youth care worker, where he leads free expression sessions and talent shows with youth who are living on the streets. .He has written and recorded two albums called The Gift of Imagination (2006) and Amathuluzi (2009), The Mbbrrryo Mixtape released in 2012. His newest work with Kzn Music House working on a new album will be released soon the market.

In addition to his professional experience, Mhligo has started the Grow Khula Movement (GKM). The goals of the GKM are two-fold: to promote a broad-based youth movement started in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal through hip-hop and to create opportunities for local artists to reach national and international hip-hop markets. Mhligo is uniquely socially conscious in his approach. Rooted in the philosophy of ubuntu, I am what I am because of who we all are, he wants the GKM to be a way to encourage young artists in Umlazi to take control of their own futures and become community leaders.
The GKM has already caught the attention of Social Innovation Advocates (SIA), a U.S.-based non-profit organization committed to supporting social activists. With the help of SIA, Mhligo’s aspiration is to realize many of the goals of the GKM. There is a plan in place for him to gather information from U.S.-based experts through skype conversations. These conversations will help build Mhligo’s knowledge base to be more effective in his community. In particular, Mhligo hopes to found Grow Khula Productions (GKP), a company that will sign underground hip-hop artists in the Umlazi community and surrounding areas in Kwa-Zulu Natal. It will fill the need for a recording studio for a group of artists who have a lot to offer but are currently underrepresented in South African and global hip-hop. GKP wants to get the attention of Umlazi youth and provide them inspiration through a medium that they respect and identify with: hip-hop.

LONDON, April 2013 – Future Cinema, the creators of Future Shorts and Secret Cinema announce the Future Shorts Festival Spring Season in celebration of Future Shorts’ 10th Anniversary.

In 10 years of showcasing electrifying short films and filmmakers from around the world in stunning venues, Future Shorts have built the world’s largest community for short film fans – from Finland to Mexico, via Mongolia and Kazakhstan: Future Shorts are screened on 6 continents, in 325 cities, in front of 40,000 short film enthusiasts yearly. And plans for the future don’t stop just there.

Future Shorts Festival connects – over 25,000 attended screenings during the Winter Season 2012/13, in spaces as diverse as submarines, snowboarding huts, art galleries, ice cream parlours, cafes, exhibition spaces and bars. During a screening in Kazakhstan, one bold audience member took to propose during the screening, with his own short feature: Future Shorts – Future Love.

From April to June 2013, the Spring Season will feature 6 shorts films exploring the grief; the joy, and the memory of living and breaking with the familiar.

Redefining conventional screenings, Future Shorts Festival will showcase Grainger David’s SXSW Jury Award-winning The Chair (USA, 2012), an insight into small-town life with a short-lived but unstoppable enemy; Grzegorz Zariczny’s The Whistle (Poland, 2012), on the dreams and hopes of a lowly football referee; Kangmin Kim’s animation short on the relationship of father and son, 38-39°C (USA/South Korea, 2011); Frida Kempff’s Micky Bader (Sweden/Denmark; 2009), Winner of the Cannes Festival Jury Prize for Short Films – the account of centenarian Micky’s daily swimming sessions at the local bathhouse; Dogs are Said to See Things (Brazil; 2012) by director Guto Parente, as well and Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash (USA, 2012), Winner of the US Fiction Award at Sundance 2013.
